Lakeland 2021 Valedictorian

Lakeland High School 2021 Valedictorian, Tom Thumb Graduate of 2008

“At Tom Thumb, we are all proud of Sayani Aggarwal for her achievements and the person she has become. It’s with warm affection I look back at the past. It seems almost like yesterday when Sayani was a little kid with a big smile in her cap and gown at her Tom Thumb Graduation in 2008. Now, she is a young woman with a wonderful future ahead.  Sayani is part of the Next Great Generation of Americans that will change this world.”, Nancy Brophy

Valedictorian – Sayani Aggarwal

Under the scorching sun at Dutchess Stadium, Lakeland’s Sayani Aggarwal addressed her classmates, faculty, and parents, reflecting on the past four years and how the unique end to her high school career allowed her class to appreciate aspects of her school in ways they would not have.

“We had no choice but to cherish the moments we had in high school as we sat in our homes for days on end,” said the valedictorian. ‘As we figured out how to express emotions behind a mask, we cherished the times when we could clearly see a classmate’s smile across a room.”

When COVID-19 regulations started to lift, and Lakeland students could begin – to meet in person again, Aggarwal said that this added to the impact those moments would make on their high school memories.

“When we were given opportunities to gain back some sense of normalcy, we cherished these moments even more because we knew that these were the final chances we had to make lasting memories, even if they were not the memories that we planned to make as freshmen,” said the National Honor Society member.

Aggarwal thanked many people who have supported her throughout her life and through an unprecedented time in her life. She thanked her friends for bringing out the best in her on her darkest days. She thanked her teachers for their influence and guidance. She thanked the parents of the volunteer group, “Class of 2021 Let’s Get it Done!” for their work in celebrating Lakeland’s seniors. She thanked and expressed her gratitude to her parents for their unconditional love and support.

“We are walking away with a shared experience, an experience that will continue to connect us as we journey through the various chapters of our lives,” said Aggarwal. Our shared experience, our memories, will be the source behind each word written in the history of these times, and through those memories, we will be immortalized.”

Aggarwal had a weighted GPA of 101.73 and never earned less than an “A” in any subject, including in her lauded science research work. She is interested in pursuing the area of chemistry

Response to Tom Thumb’s Thanksgiving

Response to Tom Thumb’s Thanksgiving

Good morning!

Thank you so much for sending home the picture from your unit of the Native American Indians. Grace was very excited and proud to tell us all about the things she learned each day during this unit. I’ve never heard her talk so much about the projects she did and offered so much detail!

She was excited to show everyone: her rain stick, her hat with feathers, play “hunting deer” with Daddy. She literally jumped for joy as she told us about the feast with all the food she tried! My heart was so full watching her excitement for learning.

Thank you for all you do each and every day. We are grateful for her teachers! And Tom Thumb!
Sincerely,
The G Family

Thank you for 5 years

Dear Mrs. Brophy,
I don’t have enough room on this card to write all of the wonderful things about you, your school and your staff. Over the past 5+ years, you have done such a great job keeping my children safe, happy, and well educated. I am proud to say that my family of four are all Tom Thumb graduates. We truly cherish all the hard work and dedication to the children in your care and especially after such a trying year and a half, you always found a way to ensure that our children could still enjoy school and celebrate milestones safely.

My only regret is that I don’t have a third child so we could continue our time at your exceptional school. You are all so appreciated and I am so glad you were in my children’s lives.

Thank you!
Love – The L. Family

Margaret’s email to Nancy Brophy

Hi Mrs. Brophy

I hope this finds everyone well.  I have been struggling with the right words to express what Isabella’s three years with you and your teachers have meant to us, especially to her.  Last night gave me the right words.  Around 9:15, she came downstairs to find us watching 100,000 Pyramid.  I decided to let her stay to watch a few minutes before bringing her back up.  I explained the game to her and decided to try to play with her.  In true 4-year-old fashion, she wanted to go first.  This is how the conversation went.

Isabella: I want to go first.  Soap, a tree, a dinosaur
Mommy: Things in Isabella’s head
(we laugh)
Mommy: Now it’s my turn.  A circle, a square, a triangle, a rectangle…Things that are ______ ( I was expecting her to say shape)
Isabella: Symmetrical

My husband and I were floored by her response.  This is a true testament to what all of your teachers have done for her.  Isabella is truly prepared for her next chapter.  If she could take Mrs. Cichetti in her pocket to Kindergarten, she would.   Thank you again for all that you have done for our girl.  You got one more coming!

Have a great summer.  We will see you at camp.
